999—DISSERTATION RESEARCH

Now that you have been advanced to candidacy and your dissertation proposal has been approved by your committee members, you may begin registration in “BIOD 999” or dissertation research.  This registration begins the semester following completion and approval of the proposal.

Once you have begun the dissertation research (“999”) phase, you must register for a minimum of 3 credits of 999 each semester, for every full semester (fall and spring) until you graduate.  If you will graduate in a summer term, you must be registered for 999 credits in that term also. When you have 3 or fewer remaining 999 credits, you may then register for 1 credit per semester.  The catalog you were admitted under dictates how many credits of 999 you may register for in a semester, and how many total 999 credits will apply to the degree.  The course will be graded as “IP” or In Progress until the dissertation is completed and a public defense is given to the satisfaction of the committee and the Dean.  For more information about continuous registration, please check the University catalog under Academic Policies for Doctoral Students.

For College of Science (COS) students,

For College of Humanities and Sciences (CHSS) students,

With both Colleges, the Dean's office will contact you using the e-mail address you provided (or phone number if your email is unavailable) and give you the Course Registration Number (CRN) that you will use to register for 999 credits.

Use Patriot Web to register for 999 credits using the CRN, as you would for a normal class.  Change the number of credits listed at the bottom of the screen as needed, check to make sure they are correct, and press “submit”.  Once you have submitted the registration, go back to your schedule online and check to make sure the course and number of credits are correct.

Please refer to your copy of the Program of Study if you are unsure of how many 999 credits to register for.  You may also contact the Biodefense program office to check your department file.

Refer to the academic calendar on the Registrar's website for registration deadlines each semester.
