BA in Government and International Politics

Degree Requirements (Catalog Year 2012-2013)

In addition to meeting the following requirements for this degree, students must meet the university requirements for all bachelor's degrees. Students pursuing a BA in government and international politics must complete 43 credits in GOVT and earn a minimum grade of 2.00 in each course applied to the major.   

  • Five core courses (16 credits): GOVT 101, 103, 132, 133, 300
  • One senior seminar (3 credits) of GOVT 490, 491 (fulfills the university synthesis requirement)
    This option is for students who have been accepted to pursue honors in the major.
  • Government field study (9-24 credits)
    Students complete the degree by taking eight advanced government field courses (24 credits), with or without concentration. Students may complete a concentration (listed at right) in one field, then complete one course in each of the remaining fields to satisfy this requirement. Students who do not pursue a concentration may choose 24 credits from the advanced government field courses listed below (with restriction) for a broader learning experience. At least one course (3 credits) from each of the four fields must be included.

    Up to 3 credits of GOVT 480 may be used to fulfill this requirement with prior approval of the internship coordinator. Up to 6 credits of 496 may be used to fulfill this requirement with prior approval of the instructor and chair. GOVT 490 may not be used to fulfill this requirement.

    • Political theory and law: GOVT 322, 323, 324, 327, 328, 329, 420, 421, 422, 423, 424, 427, 428, 470, 471, 472
    • International and comparative politics: GOVT 331, 332, 333, 334, 336, 337, 338, 339, 340, 341, 342, 343, 344, 345, 346, 347, 430, 432, 433, 434, 443, 444, 445, 446, 447, 448
    • Public policy and administration: GOVT 351, 353, 354, 355, 356, 357, 358, 359, 361, 364, 365, 366, 367, 452, 460, 464

With careful planning, some courses required for the major may also fulfill general education requirements or college-level requirements for the BA. See an advisor before registering.

Total: 43 credits

Writing Intensive Requirement

The university requires all students to complete at least one course designated “writing intensive” in their majors. Students majoring in government and international politics may fulfill this requirement by successfully completing GOVT 490 or GOVT 491 in their major programs.
