What is the Masters International Program?

The Masters International (MI) Program is a cooperative effort between the Peace Corps and George Mason University. Both the Master of Arts in Political Science and the Master of Public Administration (MPA) are designed to allow students to incorporate two (2) years of Peace Corps Service as a part of their degree.

What is it really like to be a Peace Corps volunteer?

Several of our students, currently on their Peace Corps assignment, are writing about their experiences.  You can read their internet blogs at Student Blogs .

How does the MI program fit into my Master’s degree?

The two years of Peace Corps Service will be considered an “internship.” At the completion of the 2 years of Peace Corps Service, the student will be awarded 6 credits of internship. An internship is an elective and will be counted toward the completion of the degree.

How does this work?
As a prospective student, you will apply simultaneously to both the Peace Corps and to either the MA in Political Science or the MPA. After being accepted by both, you will need to complete 18 credits prior to your Peace Corps Service.

What are the benefits of the MI program?
The obvious benefit is that you will be making an extraordinary contribution by teaching skills to people in a developing community. But, while you will undoubtedly have an impact on others during your service as a Volunteer, your host community will probably have an even greater impact on you.

In addition, the tuition for the 6 credits of internship will be waived.

Students who choose to incorporate Peace Corps Service into their masters program will be eligible to receive special hiring consideration for federal government positions up to one year after the student returns from Peace Corps service. The special hiring consideration, combined with a graduate degree, can enhance an individual’s career potential.
