Admission Information

Biodefense MS and PhD Programs

Thank you for your interest in the George Mason’s biodefense program, the first of its kind in the United States to offer a broad field of study in the defense against biological threats and other weapons of mass destruction.

The biodefense program offers coursework at the intersection of the two disciplines of policy and science.

Applicants to the program traditionally have a background in the life sciences, with university coursework in molecular / microbiology and some organic chemistry.  An interest in policy and current international affairs is also essential.  Students are not expected to complete wet lab research.

Graduates pursue careers in government agencies, national security companies, and military contracting.

We hope the information below will assist you as you complete the application process.  The faculty committee on admissions begins reviewing complete applications in early April.  In the admissions review process, all elements of an application are evaluated carefully:  past academic performance, rigor of the course selection, GRE scores, letters of recommendation, writing sample, professional experience, and “match” with the program.
