Peter Balint

Associate Professor

Research interests: environmental conservation and socioeconomic development

I'm an associate professor of environmental policy at George Mason University, with a joint appointment in the Department of Public and International Affairs and the Department of Environmental Science and Policy. My current research focuses on community-based conservation in eastern and southern Africa. I spent the Spring 2005 semester on sabbatical at the College of African Wildlife Management (Mweka) in Tanzania. More generally over the past few years, I've explored various aspects of links between environmental conservation and socioeconomic development, conducting research on this topic both abroad -- in El Salvador, Honduras, Mongolia, Mauritius, Nicaragua, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe -- and in the United States. I have a Ph.D. in environmental policy (University of Maryland, 2000), master's degrees in conservation biology (University of Maryland ,1998) and education (State University of New York at Albany, 1972), and a bachelor's degree in English (Haverford College, 1971). Before entering the University of Maryland in 1996 to study environmental issues, I taught English for more than 20 years in Albany, New York's alternative inner-city public high schools.
