Lehn Benjamin

Assistant Professor

Research interests: accountability and organizational learning

Lehn Benjamin is Assistant Professor of Nonprofit Studies in the Department of Public Affairs at George Mason University. She holds a doctorate in Regional Planning from Cornell University, with concentrations in community economic development and qualitative methods and evaluation. Prior to completing her doctorate, she worked for the Community Development Financial Institutions Fund in the United States Department of the Treasury, was a Congressional Fellow on the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee and worked for several voluntary and nongovernmental organizations on gender and development issues during the democratic transition in South Africa.

She is interested in the democratic practice and potential of nonprofit organizations. Her current research interests lie at the intersection between nonprofit organizations, accountability and democracy. With a grant from the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University, her most recent work examines the use of outcome measurement to ensure accountability and improve the performance of nonprofit community development organizations. In addition, she collaborated on a large-scale mixed method study investigating performance accountability and high stakes standardized testing in New York State schools. She has published articles in the Journal of Urban Affairs and Evaluation: International Journal of Theory and Practice
